Reflection # 7

Today is Wednesday which is internship day. It is 11:53 and I got home almost two hours ago from BLAZE. Today was actually the best day I have had so far there. Today I worked in the front instead of in the back where the kitchen is. I talked to Phyllis last Wednesday and told her that my project wasn’t only working in the kitchen but also working all over the restaurant to see how a business is run from all different aspects. A business isn’t only run by one position so I wanted to get the whole experience and find out things I didn’t know before. Well Phyllis called me yesterday and told me to wear all black instead of wearing the grey polo I usually wear. When I came in at 4:00 p.m, I hung up my jacket and then went straight to the front. From there I picked out the pretty part of the Mint leaves and out them into a container for the desserts. Then Phyllis and Chris told me to ask Lisa, one of the waitresses, to show me how to do napkins and roll ups. Once Lisa showed me how to do that, I did the rest by myself which wasn’t so bad since it was really easy. Lisa also explained to me briefly what the waitress is supposed to do. But of course I wasn’t going to be doing all that a waitress does because it was my first day up front.

Chris showed me a few things including how to reset a table. First you have to clear away all of the dishes and napkins and then take off the paper that it has on top of it. Then you are supposed to go to the roll of paper and rip two pieces each about the size of a table. From there one gets four small plates, dried off, and it gets placed two on each table diagonal from each other. A fork goes on the left side of each small plate and then a napkin sitting up gets placed next to the fork which a wine glass in the middle of it. On the other side of the napkin and glass goes a knife and a small spoon. Once all of those things are placed, the table is basically done. Throughout the whole day I was clearing off tables of plates, utensils, glass cups, and napkins. Then I would reset it exactly how I just explained it. Aside from doing tables, I also cut bread, made bread baskets, and poured water into glasses whenever new people were seated.

Overall, I liked working up front a whole lot better than in the back mainly because it was very less stressful. Even when it gets busy up front, it never even compares to how busy it gets in the back. Oh, and I made about $15 bucks because the two waitresses gave me some of their tips which I was extremely shocked about. I didn’t see that coming. And before I left, Phyllis asked me if I could come another day like Thursday and work up front. I told her I couldn’t because I work on those days. That’s when she said she would pay me if I did come on Thursdays. Whoo Hoo! I will definitely come in if I’m getting paid but first I just have to take those days off at the hospital. So I would say today was a pretty awesome day, better than I expected.
